City Pesticide Use

July 9, 2026

From an email from the City Parks & Recreation Director to the City Manager:  (link)

The City no longer uses glyphosate (roundup) for parks and non-parks (medians/roundabouts/streetscapes/etc.). The City stopped using glyphosate (roundup) approximately 6 years ago.

The City also restricted the use of glyphosate (roundup) for our mowing contractor.

The City uses the Commission-approved herbicides (Cheetah Pro & SureGuard) for broad-spectrum use in mixed landscape beds.

The addition of a pre-emergent (SureGuard) into the mix allows for a reduction of the number of spray episodes.

Other chemicals used are per weed type and vary according to industry standards.

We also use an organic alternative (Whack Out Weeds). The organic alternative (Whack Out Weeds) is used on sidewalks and pool deck crack weeds, and is supplemented with hand blading.

We remain vigilant in our review of publications from the University of Florida’s Institution of Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS) on any updates and alternatives.
